Managing and Controlling
No matter what your business is, you need to take precautions with your supply chain, writes Andrew Cave
It might sound a fatuous point but the question of how to manage and control a supply chain depends on what it is that you are seeking to manage and control.
Do you want to receive products into your supply chain at the most convenient time without loss of quality or value, either because you are a retailer who wants to sell them on to customers or a manufacturer who needs “just-in-time” delivery for its assembly line? Or is it all about managing and controlling costs, squeezing suppliers and safeguarding your all-important working capital?

Vendor Sourcing Cuts Firm Costs
Jose Manuel Pariente is a man on a mission. He began slashing costs and streamlining procurement after he joined White & Case in April following many years of sourcing management at companies ranging from Barnes & Noble to Exel. Before Pariente, the firm had “more or less handled vendor relationships and negotiation in silos, by department, like most law firms,” says Richard McKenna, chief administrative officer of New York-based White & Case. And while Huron Consulting Group had helped the firm overhaul vendor relationships, management realized that they needed to set up an in-house procurement discipline, as McKenna puts its, “so we didn’t fall back into our previous pattern.”

Does MES Need to Evolve to Better Support Total Material Flow?
The Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) solution profile continues to evolve, says Greg Gorbach, Vice President of Collaborative Manufacturing at ARC Advisory Group, with an increasing vendor focus on richer support for total materials management.
There seems to be growing interest in the area of “production logistics,” both from an operations perspective, and from the software needed to support a more integrated view of materials management.
