Yes, this is one of the many issues that will affect food supply in the near future. My view is that market mechanisms, such as a minimum land quota used for food purposes, should be used to ensure that there is a minimum competition netween these two land uses. Policy is also needed to ensure that land use is balanced between food production, urban development and fuel production. It is also worth remembering that there is a symbiotic relationship between food supply chains and climate change: the activities of the former accelerate climate change and the latter will have a drastic impact on food resources.
Cheers,

Thank you for your comment on this article. I am concerned about the unintended consequences the food chain will suffer with the added strain from bio-fuels.

My comments is about food supply chains. I think that SC strategies have a significant impact on the environment. But we tend to focus on issues that mainstream media emphasise most (e.g. food miles, carbon footprints, etc). Companies should in fact focus on three main aspects:
(a) Operational issues. Aspects such as the effect of primary production on climate change, the impact of freight transport (Food Miles) and food and packaging waste are all operational issues.
(b) Consumer issues, which encompass consumer attitudes to environmental drivers and the impact of food consumption trends on greenhouse gas emissions.
(c) Corporate issues, which include standards and regulations, financial risks, carbon trading and offsets.

All these angles are important when environmental initiatives need to be encompassed into a company’s strategic planning.

I wrote an article about this particular issue, from an Australian perspective. It is freely available at my website:

This really surprises me. I thought Liz had a deep relationship with Tradebeam for visibility. I am interested in how they will use the two together. GTN is more of a carrier container level application vs true PO management and Global Trade management.

Absolutely no surprise to see an old trading name like Li & Fung become more and more a supply chain company. All true traders eventually become supply chain companies to get the competitive edge.

Li & Fung has been the quintessential retail agent in Asia for a long time. This was a good article. Thanks for posting it!

Best,
Eric
