Introduction: a game being played to new rules

Supply chain management is a game being played to new rules. Complex, global supply chains have become the norm, involving suppliers across the world, contract manufacturers and company-owned plants, third-party logistics providers and transportation providers.

In an increasingly competitive but risk-laden global economy, most companies now treat supply chain management as a strategic issue. They want the ability to track and manage all supply chain activities in real time from a central location; a means to analyse the potential impact of unplanned events and to head off any problems they may cause; and ways to collaborate with customers and suppliers in both the planning and execution of supply chain processes.
