Await organised retail of the Indian kind!

IF THE GOVERNMENT has its way, then an Indian model for retailing that protects the street-corner Kirana stores which are under threat from big retailers, particularly in the food retailing market is in the offing.

Inaugurating a two-day conference and exhibition on ‘Winning with Intelligent Supply Chains’, organized by FICCI, Subodh Kant Sahai, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries said, “India may open up its USD 330 billion retail market after being convinced that the kirana stores will not be affected by big retailers. An agency has been engaged to make an in-depth study on the impact of FDI in food retail on our domestic market and the report is expected to be available by March 2008.”
